I recently wrote about the importance of having an AI policy that your team can clearly explain in 30 seconds.
People need clarity. Are they expected to use it a lot, a little, or not at all? When? Why?
It's better to have a policy now that you can modify later rather than have no policy.
I shared sample policies with a few organizations. Feel free to use this one as a starting draft or to edit an existing policy. And share it with those at your organization who are in charge of implementing a policy if it's not you!
Draft policy:
Why AI
It can improve efficiency and outcomes by quickly drafting or editing communication, ideas, plans, and more.
Concerns with AI
Can’t always find the right tone or accuracy. Results can be great, but not always.
Valid ethical and environmental concerns about the impacts of AI.
Risks to privacy and security.
Our policy and philosophy is:
We encourage its use for important tasks where it can quickly improve efficiency or outcomes, but nobody will be forced to use it.
We cannot rely on its results. We will always adjust for tone and accuracy.
Employees must protect confidential information.
We commit to continually developing human communication skills and technology skills.
Here are a few examples of what it should or shouldn't be used for:
Examples here.
It's important to get input on your policy from different departments - IT, HR, Communications, etc.
Thoughts? I'd love to see your plan if you have one, and it isn't 8 pages long. 😜
