How you share unpopular news is important

Unfortunately, many organizations these days need to share bad news about funding cuts or reductions in services.
Being brief and clear is especially important when you share news that might create anxiety for people, like about an organizational change or transition.
If your school district has to close schools because of low enrollment, families will naturally be upset and confused. You will frustrate families even more if your communication buries important information in long emails.
I've worked with districts and other organizations that had this exact experience.
When sharing bad or anxiety-provoking news, start by briefly acknowledging the difficulty of the situation and share the most important information. Then provide more context for those who want it.
