Why I dislike the term "plain" language

What I teach in my Simplify Communication training is known by many as "Plain Language", a term the federal government created and has used since the 1970's.
"Plain" is uncomprehensive, uninspiring and makes people think they'll be forced to use boring, unprofessional language. Many people still don't know what it is, why it's important, and why it's a problem for most people.
To me, "simplify" is more comprehensive and action-oriented. It's about choosing words your audience can understand and:
- Removing words that don't impact precision or tone.
- Choosing words that are 100% transparent.
- Improving structure and readability.
- Balancing credibility with relatability and clarity with compliance.
I use examples in training that make people jokingly say "I feel personally attacked because you just showed us what not to do, and I do that every day!" 😁
Many "plain language" resources I've seen are extreme examples that people don't relate to.
Help spread this movement by sharing that simplifying communication isn't about dumbing down your words. Encourage others to get training. Get additional training because there's always room for improvement.
I'm offering a new training: Blending AI best practices with human skills. We also dive deeper into the risks, harms, and benefits of AI. It's a big topic!
